re-install // wipe drive to remove virus?

we got a trojan about a month ago. so i called mcafee & paid $60 for the guy to talk me through fixing it. he hung up before it was done scanning & it never got fixed. mcafee refuses to fix it for no additional cost.

so-- here i am desperately needing help.

my computer completely crashes if i run it in normal mode for more than 2 minutes. i can read email & run some programs in safe mode... so i've been scraping by.

at this point, i just want to save all of my files to cd & wipe the entire drive by re-installing xp. will this work? will my virus really be gone?

i run: xp home & have an e-machines from god knows what year. it's my boyfriends.

thank you!

fyi: i did read the faq about viruses but it didn't answer my question & since mcafee's program won't fix it and neither will their people-- my window's installer program has been infected & i can't install the other recommended programs.

edit: i'm getting an error message from "nt authority \ system" that shuts down normal mode after 3 minutes after running recommended scans.

do you know the name of the virus?? try googling the exact name of it, it might turn up a guide or two on fixing it... I've had luck that way previously w/ a nasty virus/trojan or two.

the only time anything pops up is when i'm in normal mode & it flashes too short for me to take it down. it starts with an m. the mcafee guy acted like it was a lesser of all evils type virus but it's destroying everything.

Burning your files to CD is going to do nothing more then hide it and cause you to bring it back over. There is some good info over at MajorGeeks in this FAQ http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 It will help you in finding out what the virus is, and remove it. Calling Mcafee is something that noone should have to do, due to there are plenty of free resources out there, with the great boards that have people that know what they are doing.

i went through all the steps there & can now load normal windows for a minute longer than before. i was also able to restore my active desktop.

and then i got an error from "nt authority \ system". it shut me back down.

You are still having problems. You may want to post over there what you did, and the HiJackThis Log. Also, there is also http://www.malwareteks.com which you can ask and be able to get some help at.
