FileHippo & CCleaner

I am so, so sorry to bother you all again [please don't hate me...!] but I do have another question.

[By the way, per my fiance's problem, he just reinstalled XP after lots of stressing]

Is FileHippo safe? It sounds way too good to be true. My fiance says you download it, it scans your computer and tells you everything that needs updating, including your drivers.

But yes, is it safe?

Also, CCleaner, is that safe? It's just my fiance's got me panicked about anything to do with the registry as that can really mess up your computer if it's touched badly, apparently, and since CCleaner has a registry cleaner, I wondered if it was safe or not.

Is there a way to have CCleaner and not use the registry part, or do you have to use all of it?

Thank you in advance, I really do appreciate all the help :)

CCleaner is safe. I use it with clients. Also, try using Malware Bytes to scan for trojans and adware/malware/spyware.

If you need antivirus, download Avast Free Home Edition.

CCleaner is safe. Mainly it deletes temp files and stuff in the Recycle Bin, with options to shred those files with more than one overwrite if you want. It doesn't touch the registry unless you tell it to by running the Registry cleaner (a separate tool within the program). In the cleaner and general settings you can control things like what gets deleted, how it gets deleted, and so on.

FileHippo is a website where you can download a ton of useful computer tools like CCleaner; it's http://www.filehippo.com/. Just visiting that website won't download anything that scans your computer and suggest updates and drivers...that would be this:
http://download.cnet.com/Update-Checker/3000-2094_4-204402.html

And yes, it looks OK...just make sure you get it from C|Net (at the link above), not from one of the warez sites that come up first in a search on it...:)

There's a also a link to the same program from Filehippo which I'm sure the OP is talking about.

My apologies. I was just pointing out that you can actually download it from Filehippo itself as well as CNet.
